What does it mean to be HUNGRY? by Ryan Walter

I spent 17 seasons of my life in the world of professional sport. It was an intense and competitive sandbox. Lessons there are learned and applied quickly, or management brings in someone else to learn them. The road I took to develop into one of the top 700 players in the world inclined up a steep learning curve, along which the pressure to “make it” had the potential to shape my character or crush my spirit.

What does it take to perform at the highest level? All recent research suggests that 10,000 hours of focused practice is a given, but there is a need to go much deeper. There is an inner fuel which drives the best in the world to not only survive, but eventually fall in love with this arduous process.

President Ronald Reagan said, in his Inaugural Speech of Jan 20th 1981, “No arsenal is so formidable as the will and moral courage of free men and women.” Over a century before Abraham Lincoln had advised: “Always bear in mind that your own resolution to succeed is more important than any one thing.” And cosmetic giant Mary Kay Ash has since added: “The only difference between successful people and unsuccessful people is extraordinary determination.”
